Chapter 28

We reached the Daily Grind at a quarter after five. Rue and I walked inside, looked around, then locked eyes with a young lady who raised her hand and waved. She had to be Miranda, and I imagined that she knew by the way we were dressed that we had to be the detectives. The place looked more like a coffee shop frequented by young, hip twentysomethings than one where the police would hang out. We walked toward her, she introduced herself, then we did the same.

“Let’s have a seat over here. I’ll grab some coffees.” She looked back at us and smiled. “I guess I should tell you that I work here, but my shift just ended. Cream or black?”

We both said black and waited for her to return with a carafe and three cups. We thanked her, then she poured the coffee and took a seat.

“Now, what can I tell you about Sarah? I know she’s been sick. At least, that’s what she’s said in her texts to me—sore throat, can’t really talk without it hurting. We don’t see each other much at all during the week, but we girls do get together on the weekends.”

“Who are ‘we’ girls?”

“Well, it’s usually me, Sarah, Jules, and Tina.”

“And did the four of you go out last weekend?” I asked.

She chuckled. “We did, and from what I remember, we had a good time. I bet that’s where Sarah got sick, though. Twenty-One was packed.”

“That’s where you went, Twenty-One?” Rue asked. He took notes as we talked. “Anyone in particular stand out that night?”

She frowned. “Stand out? In what way?”

“As in paying unwanted attention to you ladies,” I said.

“That’s hard to say since we like the attention.”

“How about anyone who was a good twenty to thirty years older than you?”

Miranda cringed. “Eww… that’s just gross. And no, nobody like that.”

“Okay, we’re going to need the last name for Jules and the phone numbers for her and Tina.”

“Is something wrong? I mean, why are you talking to me at all?”

I glanced at Rue before continuing, then with a sigh, I told Miranda what had happened. “We’re sorry to have to tell you this, but Sarah is dead.”

Her look of confusion was understandable, especially if the killer had Sarah’s phone and had been using it to correspond with Miranda.

“What? That’s impossible. I’ve been texting back and forth with her.”

“We’re sorry, but it’s true. Sarah was killed by an intruder who took her phone and has been impersonating her.”

“Since when?”

Tears streamed down Miranda’s cheeks as I explained only what I could. “Our best guess is Tuesday night.”

“And I got a text from her Wednesday saying she was sick and again yesterday saying the same thing.”

I nodded. “May we see those texts?”

“Of course.” Miranda pulled her phone from her purse and scrolled to her exchanges with the person she thought was Sarah.

She passed the phone to me, and I read through them. “Would you mind forwarding those few texts to my phone?” I gave her my number, and she sent them.
